  3.     The Exxon Valdez oil spill (NATION, April 10) points out an
  4. interesting phenomenon that could be called the Oops theory. It
  5. states that technology, Big Government and giant corporations
  6. have made it possible for an employee to make one mistake on his
  7. job and thereby pull the plug on the planet.

  11.     The oil spill shows that environmentalists are right --
  12. again. Proponents of risky developments are full of assurances
  13. beforehand but consistently fall short when assistance is
  14. needed. Oil development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
  15. is next on the list for the oil companies. They will once more
  16. make promises about their abilities to ensure environmental
  17. protection and ignore the pleas of the environmentalists.

  21.     So Exxon's chairman, L.G. Rawl, says the company will meet
  22. its "obligations to all those who have suffered damage from the
  23. spill." I suggest that we send Exxon a bill for the extra cost
  24. of gasoline every time we leave the pump.
